The History of The Mermaid Tale Trail
In 2023, Florida’s Adventure Coast: Brooksville – Weeki Wachee marked a special milestone—the 75th anniversary of the world-famous Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. As part of the celebration, 26 magnificent mermaid statues were unveiled at the park, where they were displayed before moving to their spots along the trail.
Each statue, standing over six feet tall, was beautifully hand-painted by talented Florida artists, including Lydia Singer, a former Weeki Wachee Mermaid known for her artistic talents.
After the unveiling, Singer sat beside her statue in a mermaid tail while answering questions and receiving compliment. Her mermaid statue, “The Spring,” would find its permanent home at the state park, showcasing the history of Weeki Wachee Springs. The statue is painted with detailed scenes of past underwater performances, scenes from old photos as well as iconic visitors like Elvis Presley. The more you look, the more fun details there are to discover.
Just like “The Spring,” each statue along The Mermaid Tale Trail tells a unique story, reflecting Florida’s rich culture, history, wildlife and mythical mermaids. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you can take a scenic road trip to see them all— and even win free prizes along the way!
