In 1967, the Deltona Corporation and the Mackle Brothers began a new planned residential community in Hernando County that would be identical to the previous development, Deltona. The company bought land and constructed an administration building on the corner of Spring Hill Drive and Commercial Way, as well as the landmark metal and brick waterfall that still remains today. On April 30, 1967, the grand opening of ‘Spring Hill’ was met by 15,000 estimated visitors, with 15 model homes unveiled.
The Mackle Brothers sold properties through intense advertising in places like New York. Their marketing efforts included a unique event, the World Championship Chicken-Plucking Contest, which was held annually for over 30 years until 1995.
