Nobleton and Istachatta offer a peaceful retreat into the rural heart of Florida’s Adventure Coast, where winding country roads and natural landscapes set a slower pace of life. Rooted in agricultural heritage and surrounded by the Withlacoochee River, forests, and trails, these neighboring communities invite visitors to experience old-Florida charm and outdoor adventure.
Nestled along the Withlacoochee River just 11 miles northeast of Brooksville, the rustic charm of these two small communities makes it easy to slow down and discover natural Florida. In the 19th century, this area boomed with industries of farming, turpentine, logging, and most notably mining. Some abandoned rock and phosphate mines can still be found in the area, and the rolling hills within the Withlacoochee State Forest mark some of the permanent scars of the mining industry. The nearby Withlacoochee State Trail, created in a Rails-to-Trails program, marks where the old Atlantic Coast Line Railroad line once ran, carrying phosphate and other materials to Tampa and other parts of Florida.
A beautiful place to stop is the Lake Townsen Preserve, named after the cartographer and land speculator Francis M Townsend. In 1884, he was the first to file a map where the name ‘Istachatta’ appears, a Creek/Seminole word meaning “man snake.” A former general store has reopened as Bree’s Provisions, a sweet spot for ice cream close to the Withlacoochee State Trail.
Just two miles southeast of Istachatta is the community of Nobleton, founded in 1925 by Harry Nobles. Here you’ll find Bree’s Riverside Restaurant and their famous Nobleton burger.
