This is a wonderful and fairly new display of Turpentine camps in the 1800s and early 1900s. There is an outside circular walk with display stations explaining how turpentine camps operated. These camps tapped pine trees and then distilled them into products used in the era of wooden ships like pitch, tar and turpentine. Mostly black laborers living and working in primitive camps.
Jun 10, 2025 · Google ReviewAs other have said if your expecting exhibits on the wildlife, natural history of ecology of the forest then you'll be disappointed. If your looking for answers a were can I question then you'll may get lucky. There's an outdoor kiosk that has lots of maps too help you with the we're can I questions. So there were brochures on we're to ride horses, mountain bike, road bike trails and we're to hike. So that was pretty good. The forest is large with many separate parcels so stopping for a little help could be really productive.

Nov 28, 2025 · Google ReviewSuch kind people. We were graciously helped to orient ourselves to this huge forest. The staff at the visitor center had all the best tips and hints about scenic paved trails for ADA enjoyment. They told us about silver lake campground and the new ada bathroom and shower (which are so perfectly accessible companion bath houses). To all my friends of wheels or with any disabilities visit the visitor center for making the most of your visit to this natural wonder. Thank you, Ladies, we had a great time checking everything out. You didn’t disappoint!
