Withlacoochee State Forest is one of Florida’s largest state forests, spanning more than 150,000 acres across Hernando and surrounding counties. Named for the winding Withlacoochee River, the forest features a diverse landscape of pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and hardwood hammocks.

The forest offers a wide range of outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, and camping, with miles of trails that allow visitors to explore its natural beauty. Popular areas such as the Croom tract provide designated off-road riding opportunities, while numerous trail systems—including portions of the Florida Trail—highlight the region’s varied terrain.

Visitors can experience abundant wildlife and native plant communities while enjoying a peaceful, nature-focused setting. With its size, biodiversity, and variety of activities, Withlacoochee State Forest offers one of the most expansive outdoor recreation opportunities on Florida’s Adventure Coast.

Hiking in the Withlacoochee State Forest is one of my favorite ways to slow down and reset. The trails are clear and easy to follow, which lets me relax and actually enjoy where I am instead of worrying about navigation. As you walk, you can hear the quiet movement of the river in certain areas and the wind blowing through the trees, and that sound alone makes the hike worth it. What really stands out to me are the open areas mixed throughout the forest. These are not just clearings, but wide open pine forests where the treetops stretch out and the landscape opens up in every direction. You move in and out of these spaces naturally as you hike, and each one feels a little different. It gives the forest a sense of depth and variety that I really enjoy. This is also one of my favorite places to stop and have lunch. Sitting out there, listening to the wind moving through the pines and the subtle sounds of nature around you, everything slows down. It is simple, peaceful, and very Florida in the best way.
