But if you want to eat a shockingly good Maine lobster roll under a massive thatched roof while watching $200,000 boats get dropped into the water, Hernando Beach Tropical Grille is exactly where you want to be. Hidden behind the fence of the Hernando Beach Marina right on Shoal Line Boulevard, this open-air tiki bar is the definition of a local secret. You can arrive by car, but rolling up on a boat and tying off at the dock feels like the true way to experience it. The Food Despite operating out of a modest kitchen setup, the menu leans heavily into authentic New England-style seafood. The standout star is the Maine Lobster Roll, which you can order served cold with traditional mayo or hot with melted butter. The portions are generous, and the quality rivals what you'd find in Massachusetts (which makes sense, given the owner's Danvers, MA roots). Other menu highlights include: Ipswich Wholebelly Clams: Crispy, briny, and increasingly hard to find done right in Florida. Naked Gator Bites: Instead of burying the meat in heavy deep-fried batter, they use a dry-rub spice blend that actually lets you taste the gator. Blackened Grouper Sandwich: Fresh, perfectly seasoned, and served with a tangy chipotle tartar sauce. The Vibe & Verdict This is a flip-flops and sunglasses kind of joint. Dogs are welcome, the beer and wine are ice cold (note: no liquor is served), and the waterfront sunset views over the canal are unbeatable. The only downside? They close on the earlier side—usually around 7 PM—so you need to plan for a late lunch or an early dinner.
