Developed in the 1960s, this waterfront community began as a small fishing village, with canals and channels built for boats to reach the gulf. In 1971, further plans for development stopped when wetland development restrictions were passed - resulting in Hernando Beach retaining much of its natural state today. Originally, plans for the development included an actual ‘Hernando Beach,’ however, today visitors and residents instead enjoy the natural coastal flats, the nearby Weekiwachee Preserve, and the many wildlife sightings in the area. Beach-lovers can also enjoy the nearby Pine Island Beach Park for sunsets and sand.
