Croom Wildlife Management Area
The Croom Wildlife Management Area offers over 20,000 acres of cypress and longleaf pine forests adjacent to the Withlacoochee River. This area is a haven for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts; keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, southern fox squirrels and the rare red-cockaded woodpecker. Croom Wildlife Management Area is one of those rare places where Florida still feels wild and unapologetically real. Whether you’re out here for Jeep trails, hiking, or exploring the caves, this place delivers. The off-road terrain is legit, sandy, rutted, and challenging enough to keep things interesting without needing a purpose-built rig. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why you own a Jeep in the first place. The hiking is equally solid, with rolling terrain (by Florida standards), quiet trails, and enough variety to keep it from feeling repetitive. It’s peaceful, scenic, and far removed from the crowds and concrete. The caves add a unique element you don’t expect in Florida, raw, natural, and a little surreal. They make exploring Croom feel like more than just another walk in the woods. Croom is also well-known as a managed hunting area, and even if you’re not a hunter, it’s clear the land is carefully maintained and respected. The balance between recreation, conservation, and wildlife management is done right here. This isn’t a polished park ,and that’s the point. It’s rugged, authentic, and one of the best outdoor experiences Florida has to offer. If you enjoy off-roading, hiking, wildlife, or just being somewhere that still feels untouched, Croom is a five-star destination.
Jan 7, 2026 · Google ReviewCroom Loop C is a 7 mile trail with lots of elevation gain and loss. There has been a recent prescribed burn so wide open vistas on a good portion of the trail. We saw a herd of 7 deer and heard lots of bird calls. The first portion of the trail is fairly tricky as it is a steep downhill trail with lots of roots for a trip hazards. A bonus is an unmarked side trail to the right at the beginning of the trail to an old family cemetery with a Confederate soldier buried there. It is about a tenth of a mile to the cemetery.

I am currently doing 2 weeks solo camping with the river rising , I have the ranger's email, and the camp hosts cell number with instructions to call anytime 24/7 if I need assistance, they sure know how to make a person feel cared for I

Nov 4, 2025 · Google ReviewRiver Junction campground. It's basic. Water on site, no electric, which was fine. Bathroom is Spartan but functional. Nice trails to walk, take pics.
