Fall is here, and the nights are cooling down, making the Gulf waters cooler as well. This cool down is what pushes the game fish toward a feeding frenzy. We have an abundant amount of bait all over our waters, from 2-3 feet to depths over 12 feet. Also, stone crab traps are going out for the season that starts on the 15th. With all the bait and stone crab traps now full of dead bait, it’s like a massive chum block out there and this draws mackerel, cobia, grouper, snappers, triple tails and of course sharks. Gag grouper fishing is now to the end of December. We do very well in shallow waters 6-12 feet deep.
Backcountry fishing means the reds and snook are all over the outer islands and points. Use live green backs rigged with a 1/0 – 2/0 circle hook and a 25-30-pound leader. Fish with the current, casting up current, and let it drift into the strike zone.
Sea trout are working into the shallow 3-5-foot depth and live green backs are great baits. As an alternative, use a MirrOlure 17 and 27 Mr.
