March is the turn around month for fishing here along the Florida’s Nature Coast. As we transition out of the cold winter patterns and into warmer water temperatures, the fish will be hungry and aggressive.
Red fish, snook and sea trout will be holding on the shallow flats and lime rock bottoms during the month of March. Live pilchards, aka green backs, are my top choice for live bait with pin fish my second favorite. Rig the baits with a 2/0-3/0 circle hook and a 25-30 pound leader. Fish the tides – if it’s low, target trout on the flats and deeper holes. When the tide is up, fish for reds and snook up by the islands and mangrove points, and trout on the hard line rock bottoms. Mirrodine xls are great baits to search for trout with.
A little offshore, in 8-15 foot depths, look for triple tails around anything floating; crab trap markers, card board, etc. Small live shrimp rigged with a 1/0 Hook and 25 pound leader is all you need. Cobia are showing up as well on the flats and near by wrecks. I like to fish the Shallow first and come April/May look for them on the wrecks. Live pilchards for bait or a 5 inch soft plastic fluke with do the trick.
