Parks, Preserves & Trails

Ample sunshine, balmy weather and a vast network of trails that wind through parks, preserves, and wildlife areas make Florida’s Adventure Coast, Brooksville-Weeki Wachee an excellent place to hike and bike throughout the year. Paved paths along former railroad beds give cyclists safe, convenient places to ride while off-road trails set deep within forests offer wild escapes for mountain bikers and OHV riders, trail runners, birdwatchers, and equine enthusiasts alike.

Florida’s Adventure Coast is rich with trails, paved, unpaved, wild and untamed, there’s a path for every type of adventure.

Officially designated as part of the Florida Greenways and Trail System, the Withlacoochee State Trail is also designated as a National Recreation Trail, offering rich opportunities for viewing flora, fauna, birds and wildlife, and provides access to many outstanding recreational opportunities. This 46-mile-long trail is a magnet for cyclists and hikers alike. Paralleling the paved trail is an unpaved trail beloved by horse-back riders.

Brooksville’s Good Neighbor Trail connects historic downtown Brooksville to the Withlacoochee State Trail. Ten miles long, this scenic urban greenway begins at the Russell Street Trailhead, where you’ll find restrooms and picnic areas, and connects to the 46-mile-long Withlacoochee State Trail. The Russell Street Trailhead is just minutes from downtown historic Brooksville’s charming restaurants and quaint shops; perfect for a lunch break or exploring.

The Suncoast Trail is another in Florida’s Statewide Greenways and Trails System. The trail parallels the Suncoast Parkway, beginning in northern Hillsborough County and running north through Pasco and Hernando counties. Passing through a mix of suburban, agricultural, and natural areas, the trail incudes rest areas and interpretive signs that illuminate the trail’s historical significance and identify the local ecology. A favorite of cyclists and hikers alike, the Suncoast Trail offers a variety of rolling terrain not found elsewhere in Florida.

Forego the pavement and explore the Withlacoochee State Forest via the Croom Loop Trails, offering hilly hiking and cycling through deeply forested ravines on the northern section, gently rolling sandhills to the south, and low-lying floodplain forests along the river. Named one of the “10 Coolest Places You’ve Never Been in North America” by the World Wildlife Fund, the Withlacoochee State Forest is a haven for the outdoor enthusiast. Activities include miles of trails for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and birdwatching.

Whether you prefer paved or forested trails, you’ll find the perfect path to explore along Florida’s Adventure Coast, Brooksville-Weeki Wachee.
