Fishing in July is on and off. Start early with a good tide. With Gulf water temperature at 90 degrees, I typically plan to finish fishing by 11:00 am. Fishing inshore works with the stronger tides for a better bite.
Redfish are holding on the rocky points and mangrove islands. Live pin fish or pilchards will work for bait, as well as fresh cut mullet.
Offshore the gag grouper bite is also hit and miss; we have been doing best in fifteen feet of water with live bait. The bite is very short; on each spot we hook a few fish and then they turn off. Live bait will keep the bite going a little longer.
Scallop season has started and, it’s too early to say whether this will be a bountiful year. Most of the time, this early, the scallops are still ten feet deep or so and they work their way in to shallow water in a few weeks.
