Water is cold and the inshore game fish are pushing back into the creeks. Here along Florida’s Adventure Coast, we have dozens of creeks and springs and when the water temperature drops our flats fish look for warmth. Depending on the tide, I like to start either at the mouth of creeks or midway in. During low tide the fish will pull out a little and during higher tides they will move back further into the creeks.
Live shrimp and pin fish are the go-to live baits for this month. I also like to drop my leader size down to 20-pound test 2-3 foot long. A 1/0-2/0 circle hook is a great size hook for the size bait we have right now.
Red fish, trout, sheepshead and black drum are all hanging around together in the creeks and springs. Take a slow approach and look for activity such as mullet schools or birds when working bait. Also, fish the potholes on the low tides as these are also very good areas that will hold fish.
Offshore the mangrove snapper bite is insane along with hog fish and a few red grouper being caught in 25+ feet of water. Live shrimp on a hog ball jig for mangroves and hog fish and jumbo shrimp or threadfins for red grouper.
I hope everyone will have a great and happy new year.
