A half-year long, grouper season is now over until June 1st. I thoroughly enjoyed the grouper catches would like to thank my clients share that joy year after year.
January is a good month for speckled trout, red fish and sheepshead. We target Sheepshead – sometimes called Convict fish – on the shallow rocks. In 8-12 feet of water, use a 1/8-1/4 ounce jig head and a live or dead shrimp. Sheep’s hit very light so keeping a tight line is the way to go.
Trout and red fish will hold on the shallow limestone bottoms in one-to-two feet of water. Live shrimp or pin fish will do the trick to catch these fish. This time of year however, lures are great to use too. I like the Mirr-O-Dine 17mr in 808 and 50 color or a top water lure like a spook jr in bone color.
