December is here and so are the cold weather fronts. As the water temperature cools down, we are experiencing the transition from fall to winter fishing patterns.
December is the last month to harvest gag grouper in our waters. The bite is very good with some big gags reeled aboard on every trip. We cast and troll for gag grouper with plugs on rock piles in six to thirteen feet of water. Rapala FMAG 18’s in mullet color, fire tiger and orange and gold are the best colors to use.
Inshore, the trout are in shallow, one-to-three-foot depth, waters on lime rock bottom and kelp beds. These areas will hold more heat than a grass flat; in the cold weather, the sun will warm the lime rock bottom faster. Use a zoom fluke in white, albino or watermelon red color with a 4/0-5/0 weed-less worm hook. This rig is a soft presentation for trout that they can’t resist. Red fish will also hold in the same areas and eat the same rig. Live shrimp or pin fish will also always get the job done.
