Spring fishing is on fire on Florida’s Adventure Coast, Brooksville-Weeki Wachee. April is a very good month for fishing both in-shore and off-shore waters.
In-shore action is very good with red fish, snook, sea trout, and cobia. Cobia are roaming in the shallows right now and feeding on anything you present to them. My go-to bait is live pilchards, aka green backs, rigged with a 30-40 pound leader, about 3 foot long, and a 2/0-3/0 circle hook is working very good. Most of the cobia are hanging with sting rays and spotted eagle rays.
Red fish, snook and trout are all holding in the same areas. We are finding them on outside islands and mangrove points. Live pilchards and live pin fish are the go-to baits. My rig is a 2 foot leader of 25-30 pound test and a 2/0 circle hook. Sometimes we use a cigar float if it’s rocky, or want to drift the baits with the current. It really depends on the area you are fishing.
Off-shore bite is crazy right now in 20-40 foot water. Big mangrove snappers, hog fish, grunts, red grouper king fish, and cobia, are all feeding very good. Live shrimp for hog fish rigged with a Hog Ball, letting it sit on them bottom is the way to go. Mangrove snapper can be chummed up and caught with free lining baits such as shrimp, or cut pilchards most snappers are ranging 2-8 pounds. Free line and live pilchards for kings and cobia on the surface, and squid or thread fins on the bottom for red grouper.
